Fiction Collection
There are Picture books (E), Easy Readers (ER) for K-2nd grade reading levels,
and Juvenile Fiction (J) for 3rd grade through middle school reading levels in the collection. The Easy
Readers and Juvenile Fiction are shelved separately and alphabetically by author.
What iceberg sank the Titanic? Who found a dinosaur in Montana? How do you say hello in Tahiti? Need a science fair project? Want to train your puppy or grow rice in your backyard?
Answers to these questions and more can be found in the library's non-fiction collection. The collection
has books, encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases and software to help you explore all kinds of
topics.
The library has a large number of magazines of special interest to children, parents, caregivers and teachers. Many of the magazines are available for check-out. The magazines include such titles as: American Girl, Cricket, Instructor, Kid's National Geographic, Kiki, LadyBug, Sports Illustrated Kids, Home Education, Nickelodeon, Sesame Street and more. The children's room has kid-friendly computers available. You can look for books, software and magazines, do research, use our educational software, play games or search the Internet. Leap Ahead, Magic School Bus, Carmen Sandiego, Schoolhouse Rock, JumpStart, Sesame Street and other computer software CDs are available for use in the children's room and for checkout.

Parent-Teacher Collection and Services
The library has a collection of materials for parents and teachers that covers a variety of topics to help parents and teachers with children's development and educational needs. The collection includes topics such as infant and child development, parenting skills, health and nutrition, learning activities and games, as well as resources for homeschooling families. The collection is located on the east wall of the children's room.
The children's room has prepared booklists on a wide variety of topics of interest to children, parents, teachers and caregivers. Each booklist includes the title, author and call number of the item. Topics range from ants to frogs to trains, from ADD/ADHD to infant care to grief counseling and more. See the complete list of booklists for all the topics.
The library's laminating machine is available for use by the general public. The cost is 75¢ per foot, with a minimum 75¢ purchase.
The library owns many of the award winning Newbery Medal and Caldecott Medal books. In 1921, the first Newbery Medal was awarded to an author for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. In 1938, the first Caldecott Medal was awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Both of these awards are given out annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association. Look here for a complete list of the Caldecott Medal Winners and the Newbery Medal Winners.
The library also owns many of the Coretta Scott King Award winners. The award has been presented
annually since 1970 to an African American author and an
African American illustrator for an outstandingly inspirational
and educational contribution. The award commemorates the
life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and
honors Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and
determination to continue the work for peace and world brotherhood.

The library also owns many of the Rebecca Caudill
Young Readers' Book Award winners. The award is
given annually to the author of the book voted most outstanding by students in
grades four through eight in participating Illinois schools. The award is named in honor
of Rebecca Caudill who lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois for nearly 50 years.
The award is given in recognition for her literary talent and the
universal appeal of her books which have touched the hearts of many children and young adults.

The library's collection also includes the Monarch Award winners. The Monarch Award: Illinois' K-3 Children's Choice Award is given annually to the author and/or illustrator chosen by Illinois school children in grades Kindergarten to 3rd grade. The Monarch Award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association. Look here for the complete list of the Monarch Award winners.
Need to bake a fun cake for a special event? The library has cake pans available for checkout. The shapes include a book, heart, ghost, Big Bird, teddy bear, truck, rag doll, dinosaur, lamb, cat, train, football, batman and Winnie-the-Pooh.
