Library News

The Big Read. The Big Read brings communities together to read, discuss, and celebrate great books and writers. Our 2010 Big Read title is My Antonia by Willa Cather. Click here for more information and an event calendar.

Tax Assistance. Monmouth College student volunteers trained by the IRS will once again provide free tax assistance and prepare simple tax returns for individuals with incomes below $50,000. Tax services are available on a first come, first served basis. Click here for more information.

Downloadable Books. The library’s new downloadable audio and e-book service is now up and running. The Alliance Digital Media Library replaces My Media Mall. It has 40 participating public libraries in central Illinois and is a contracted service with OverDrive, Inc. Visit http://alliance.lib.overdrive.com to get started, or click here for more information.

The Movie of the Book Club meets in the evening at least once a month at Showplace 8 to see the new movie (with a literary connection, if possible). We will next meet on Tuesday, March 16 to see the 6:10 pm showing of Alice in Wonderland. Afterwards, we will discuss the movie at Perkins Restaurant. Both the movie and restaurant are pay-your-own-way. If you would like to receive email updates about the club, please send an email message to reference@galesburglibrary.org. Newcomers welcome! Click here for more information about the book and movie clubs.

Animanga Mania. Teens, come to the library for Animanga Mania once a month on Wednesday afternoons. We watch anime series, swap manga, and host an open-draw session upstairs. You can even cosplay! No registration required; just show up to watch, swap and draw. Snacks and materials are provided. The next Animanga Mania will take place on Saturday, March 20, from 2:00-4:00 pm, with a special viewing of Ponyo (©Disney). The next regular session is on March 31 at 3:30 pm. Join us!

Email notification. Would you like to receive email  notification of an item waiting for you at the library instead of receiving a phone call? Add an email address to your library card account. You can do this yourself by logging in to your account with your library card number and personal identification number (PIN). Be sure you use an email address you check regularly; in the near future, anyone with an email address will only receive an email when holds are available and when items are overdue. Currently, we send an email and call you (if we have your phone number).

Tri-States Audio Information Services. Visually impaired, learning impaired and physically impaired patrons may be eligible for a free radio reading service through Western Illinois University. The service provides radios which are made to receive special frequency broadcasted readings of a variety of newspapers and magazines. Applications may be found on the top of shelving in the audio books section of the library, or stop by the Reference Desk for assistance. You may also call the audio information service at 309-298-2403.

New Library Process. We appreciate the great interest from the community in the Galesburg Public Library. Please note that a location for a new Galesburg Public Library has not been chosen. Exploration into potential sites is ongoing. A list of frequently asked questions regarding the possibility of a new library can be found here.

Writing Contest Reception. A reception for the Big Write, the library's annual creative writing contest, will be held on Saturday, May 1, at 2:00 pm at the library. Winners, entrants, friends, family, and the community are all invited to attend. Refreshments will be served and the winners will have the opportunity to read their entries. The graphic short stories will be on display. Click here for more details about the contest.

Harry Potter Display. The Galesburg Public Library has been chosen to host Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine in June 2010. (Please note that this small Harry Potter science display is not related to the large Harry Potter movie exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.)  Click here for more information.

Ancestry.com. The Galesburg Public Library has a subscription to the online database Ancestry.com. Discover your ancestors with the world's largest family history website. Start a family tree, browse census records and more online at Ancestry.com. (Only available from within the library.)
