The Friends of the Galesburg Public Library group was organized in 1984 to support the library's work. The Friends is a nonprofit organization open to everyone, regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, or place of residence. The group operates under the supervision and guidance of the Board of Trustees and does not involve itself in library policy.
Membership brochures are available here and at the library. You may contact the Friends via email for additional information.
The Friends are always looking for new members who want to support the Galesburg Public Library’s programs and services. Please call the library at 343-6118 for more information.
"Sometimes organizations have behind-the-scenes volunteers who provide hours of service, but receive little or no recognition. Nancy Lambing is such a person. For years, Nancy has organized Friends of the Library book sales. She sorts donations once a week, along with other loyal volunteers. She handles publicity including press releases and signs. Nancy sends reminder postcards to volunteers who work the sales, puts out genre signs for the sale, creates cash boxes, counts sale revenue and makes bank deposits, supervises volunteers at the sales, provides change as needed, helps customers and consolidates books after the big rush of buyers. Nancy was not able to be present for this year’s spring book sale and her presence was greatly missed. I learned the hard way just how much she did for the book sale and for the library. A special thanks to Judy Smith and Pat Reyburn for “pinch-hitting” in Nancy’s absence. Thanks, too, to the other Friends who contributed to another successful Friends of the Library book sale."
The Friends hold two books sales a year. The next sale is Saturday, October 23, and Monday, October 25.
On the first day, the sale runs from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Books, records, and cassettes are sold for 50¢. Videotapes, DVDs, audiobooks, and CDS are sold for $1. Children's hardback books are sold for 50¢; children's paperback books are 25¢. Vintage books, magazines and sheet music are priced individually.
Remaining items are discounted and sold for $1.50 a bag on the second day of the sale, which runs from 9:00-2:00 pm. Vintage books are sold at a greatly reduced price on the second day.
Donations of items for the book sales are accepted at any time. However, it is very much appreciated when they are dropped off prior to the hectic two weeks before a sale. Bringing items in early gives the Friends time to sort and organize them for the sale. A big thank you to everyone who donates items and to everyone who shops at the sales.
The current officers of the Friends are:
Barbara Brown - President
Liz Means - Vice President
Nancy Lambing - Treasurer
Pat Reyburn - Secretary
