Anyone living in Galesburg, including a Knox College student, or owning property within the city limits is eligible for a free library card.
If you do not live within the city limits of Galesburg, you may purchase an annual non-resident card that is good for the entire family. The non-resident fee is equal to the current library tax rate applied to the assessed valuation of your principal residence (excluding farm buildings and farm land values). A non-resident property owner pays the same amount for a library card that a city resident pays on a comparable property within the city limits of Galesburg. A copy of the most recent tax bill will be required for verification.
Non-resident renters pay 15 percent of their monthly rent for the annual non-resident fee card. A copy of a current rent receipt or payment will be required for verification.
Four month short term residency cards are available for $25 for temporary visitors such as visiting artists, students, workers or consultants. Additional information is available at the library or by email from the circulation desk.
Applications are available at the Library. Photo identification and proof of current address must be presented at the time of application. A parent or legal guardian must provide identification and sign the application for individuals under the age of 16. In some cases, a tax bill may be required.
Your library card must be presented whenever you wish to check out library materials or use the public use computers.
You may be prohibited from checking out materials or using the library's computers if your overdue fines or bills are $5 or greater.

A book drop is located at the Broad Street entrance to the city parking lot behind the library. This drop is open 24 hours a day for your convenience. Please do not place audio books, magazines, CDs, DVDs or videos in the book drop. There is an audiovisual drop near the door for some AV materials.
Notary service is normally available at the Reference Desk when the library is open. Bring a signed photo ID with you, and do not sign the document in advance. Notary service is free. (Before making a special trip, please call the library at 343-6118 to make sure a notary will be available.)

Overdue fines are assessed from the first day the item is overdue at a rate of 10¢ per day. Charges for items returned damaged will depend upon the extent of the damage. Lost or stolen items will be billed at cost of replacement plus a processing charge.
A text messaging service called Shoutbomb is available if you would like to receive text notices on your phone about holds that are available, items that are due soon, overdue items, and fines. Shoutbomb also lets you send a text to renew a loan. (The library does not charge a fee for this service, but your mobile planís regular text-messaging rates apply.) Click here for more information.
Is there something you would like to see the library purchase for the collection? The library welcomes suggestions and will consider all requests. Stop by the reference desk during library hours or use our Suggest a Purchase Form to make your recommendation.
